India's ace shuttler P.V. Sindhu lost to the second-seeded Tai Tzu-Ying of Chinese Taipei in the semifinal of the Women's singles Badminton event at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics. She will now be playing for the Bronze medal against China's B.J. He, who lost her Semifinal match against China's Y.F. Chen.
Sindhu was gunning for Gold in her second Olympic games having won Bronze in her first Olympic Games at Rio 2016. She was on a glorious run leading up to the Semifinal but faltered against the hard run of play by the T.Y. Tai.
Chinese Taipei player was very deceptive in her play which is her strength and won a lot of points on the cross-court shots. Her play near the net was simply exceptional.
After the first set, it felt like Sindhu is playing a reactive game. She was trying to bring out something magical to end the point in short rallies but ended up giving a lot of points due to unforced errors. Chinese Taipei player was really good in long rallies as she was able to control Sindhu's court play through her perfect smashes and cross-court shots near the net.
Sindhu and Tai had played each other 19 times prior to this match and Tai won 14 of them. This also included the 2018 Asian games Women's final where Sindhu lost.
Winning and losing are part and parcel of the game but credit should be given for her efforts and admiration for the representation of India at such a high level.
Sindhu will now be looking to seal the Bronze medal, which will be her second Medal at the Olympics if she wins.
